Responsible Gambling
Responsible gambling means keeping betting within time and money limits you set in advance, understanding the terms you are agreeing to, and knowing how to stop. This page explains the protections that exist in Great Britain, what you give up when you use a betting site that is not on GAMSTOP, and how to keep control either way. Fact-check date: 1 October 2026.
You must be 18 or over to gamble. Betting is a paid form of entertainment, not income and not a way to solve money problems. Every bet can lose.
What GAMSTOP and the UK Gambling Commission actually do
The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) licenses and regulates gambling for customers in Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales). Northern Ireland has its own separate rules, so check your position there. Licensed operators must offer deposit limits, verify age and identity, and handle complaints through a set procedure, with access to an approved dispute-resolution service.
GAMSTOP is the free national self-exclusion service. Once registered, UKGC-licensed sites and apps must block your account for the period you choose: six months, one year or five years. The exclusion cannot be shortened. When it ends, you are not automatically reopened; you need to take steps to return.
Sites described as not on GAMSTOP generally operate under overseas gambling licences and are not part of that scheme. Accepting British customers is not the same as being authorised to serve them by the UKGC. That distinction matters for everything below.
What you lose when a site is outside GAMSTOP
- No GAMSTOP block. Your self-exclusion does not apply, which is a serious risk if you registered because you were losing control.
- Different protections. Limits, affordability checks and complaint routes depend on the operator and its overseas licensing body, and may be weaker or harder to enforce from the UK.
- Harder disputes. If a withdrawal is delayed or a bonus is voided, you cannot rely on UK-style redress.
- Payment variation. GBP accounts, currency conversion, card availability and crypto support differ by site and should be verified, not assumed.
If you have self-excluded with GAMSTOP, do not use a non-GAMSTOP site to get around it. Doing so removes the protection you chose. Contact GamCare or the National Gambling Helpline instead.
Setting your own limits
Where a site offers them, use these tools before your first bet:
- Decide a monthly betting budget from spare money, never rent, bills or borrowed funds.
- Set a deposit limit at or below that figure. Check whether it applies daily, weekly or monthly.
- Set a loss limit and a session time reminder if available.
- Do not chase losses with a bigger stake or a bonus.
- Use a reality check or take regular breaks, especially during live in-play betting, where speed encourages impulsive bets.
Worked example: with a £50 monthly budget, a £50 deposit limit means a £10 bet on odds of 2/1 returns £30 in total including your stake if it wins, and you lose £10 if it does not. Neither outcome should change the budget.
Reading bonus terms before you accept them
Bonuses are marketing, and they can encourage you to bet more than planned. Check these points first:
- Wagering requirements: how many times the bonus (sometimes bonus plus deposit) must be staked before withdrawal.
- Minimum qualifying odds and which sports or markets contribute.
- Maximum bet and cashout limits while a bonus is active.
- Expiry dates that can push you to bet quickly.
- Payment exclusions, as some methods may not qualify.
You can decline any bonus. Taking one often adds restrictions on withdrawing your own deposit. Our Terms and Conditions explain how this site operates, and our non GamStop casino guide covers casino-side rules.
Crypto, payments and spending control
Some overseas sites accept cryptocurrency, and several of those we feature are crypto-friendly. Crypto can make spending feel abstract and its value can move between deposit and withdrawal. Treat the sterling value as your real stake, and note that any conversion may carry fees. Card, e-wallet or bank-transfer availability for British customers varies, so verify it on the operator's own site. Be aware that a shared casino and sportsbook wallet makes it easy to drift between products.
Verification and withdrawals
Expect identity checks (KYC) and sometimes source-of-funds questions before withdrawing. These are normal, but you should upload documents only through the operator's official account area. No site can guarantee withdrawals or timings. Keep screenshots of terms and chat records in case of a dispute.
Operators mentioned on this site
We review sites including Tenobet, smash and Betninja, and list others such as CoinPoker, WinnerIsland, Gambiva, Gamble Gorilla, BetBluff, Rolletto and 7abet. Welcome offers are advertised by the operators, and we have not verified their terms here, so read them in full. Most are described as not UKGC-licensed, so GAMSTOP and UK complaint routes should not be assumed. Editorial ratings reflect our research and are not customer-review scores. Our site may earn commission from some links, but this does not decide rankings. See About Us for more.

Choosing sensibly, or choosing to stop
If gambling is causing you harm, the safest step is to stay inside GAMSTOP and use blocking software. If you still choose to bet, set limits first, read the bonus terms, verify payments and licensing, and stop when the budget is gone.
